Rewear on the Hollywood Red Carpet

Rewear on the Hollywood Red Carpet

Once upon a time, reusing a dress was high up on the list of fashion faux pas (and with the onset of social media documenting every outfit, one could even argue that it became number one). But lately, a movement towards sustainable fashion, specifically reusing and upcycling, has made rewearing more than just acceptable, but admirable.

See Hollywood star Rita Moreno, who decided to reuse a decades-old gown to the 2023 Academy Awards. Now, this was a big moment for two reasons–first, the creation was by late Filipino fashion designer Pitoy Moreno; second, she wore the dress to the same event 60 years ago when she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1962.

Moreno gave the dress a few alterations, most noticeably a change in neckline from a classic boat to a more contemporary strapless. She also spruced it up with longer gloves, gilded jewelry, and a black headband.

To us, this inspired a new era for sustainable fashion, specifically for occasion wear–moments where we feel the most pressured to buy something new. With a bit of creativity– a readjustment here, a change of accessories there–you can redesign anything you’ve grown out of into something fitting to your style today.

So, for your next big event, take a trip up your attic to find a forgotten favorite–you’ll never know what treasure you’ll discover. And hey, if rewear is good enough for the Oscars, it’s good enough for us!
